Hi Martin, Steve C here. I saw your post the night before I left for the Mawson trail. Anyway I just got back. A great adventure, highly recommended. I caught the bus North and went top down. I rode my Niner MCR with bikepacking kit. Total distance was a tad longer than anticipated at 940k. I did the complete trail in 5 days averaging 188/day, about 10 hours of pedalling/ day. My kit was about 6 kg all up including packs, without food and water. You can find the details on Strava and are welcome to email or call if you want. Just do it.
