Hi all Victorian Climbers,
I have watched with interest your reviews of Climbing Gyms, their owners and the infamous Melbourne City Climbing Gym.
Thanks to all those who liked Cliffhanger! For those that haven't been before, we do have a new RadWall Bouldering Cave with heaps of new Uncarved Block Holds, bring your own CD to put into the Cave's stereo system...but i digress...
The new gym in the City, and who will operate it...mmm...
Yes, Cliffhanger has been negotitating with Verve 501 management, along with several other bidders, to operate the climbing wall. The wall is not scheduled to open until 2005, so i would suggest 2006. The publicly available plans and models show the main wall being 23 metres high.
Cliffhanger managment have some fundamental issues with the project that will more than likely mean we do not win the bid to manage the project, including the fact that the wall size/type is nominated by Verve and will probably cost around $1 million to build, the opposing wall will be all glass, which means it will be very hot, Public Liability insurance is an unknown quantity for 2006, and most of all, we do not believe we could operate it at prices that climbers can afford to pay and still turn a profit.
As most of you know, climbing gyms are NOT good investments, and another one that costs $1 mil to build is going to have to charge $20 + for a casual entry (without gear) at todays cost structure, so who knows what price they would have to charge in 2005/6.
We are in there trying guys, but if it's not viable then Cliffhanger will not do it. For that matter, i personally believe you shouldn't count the chickens until they have hatched!!!! |
