This survey will directly influence the final plan of management for the newly gazetted Berowra Valley National Park (formerly a regional park)

We need quality submissions, not gripes or whines.

Tell them rock climbing has become popular in the area in the last few years, particularly along the escarpment below Beaumont Rd (known as the "Mt Kuringai" climbing area)

If you plan on submitting a lengthy response, please take the time to read the 2005 plan of management to get an understanding of the issues that are important to the decision makers.

Environmental impact (endangered flora, fauna, soil erosion, protection of heritage sites such as middens, and so on) and their ability to manage "active recreation" are some of the issues.

Interesting to note the new survey now makes specific mention of horse riding and mountain biking, which was not in the 2005 plan of management.

Interestingly climbing at Berowra pre-dates the 2005 Plan of Management and some NPWS people would have known this from as early as 2002.

When the Climbers' Clean-Up Day took place on 3rd March 2002 a NPWS helicopter assisted by winching out dumped car bodies from the base of the cliff.

I reckon we need to mention stuff like this in our submissions, as community engagement is a high priority for the NPWS in the current climate. (It pleases the minister and one of the few ways to access funding!)

From the 2005 plan of management:
"Social Value
Being surrounded by such a large number of suburbs, the Park is used by the public on both an individual and group basis. Many people use the Park on a daily basis for pursuits such as exercise, nature appreciation, dog walking or simply to relax in a bushland setting. [snip etc etc]
The high levels of use (from both locals and visitors) and variety of activities available within the Park have fostered the involvement of a large number of community groups. Most of these groups are voluntary and carry out vital activities which contribute significantly to the recreational and conservation value of the Park. Bush regeneration, rubbish removal, data collection, and production of a guidebook are some of the activities carried out by community groups associated with the Park."
