If I remember right, the last full year's total Australia wide figures I saw were $15.6 billion revenue from road related taxes (petrol excise, reg etc) and $15.8 billion expenditure on roads. So drivers pretty much pay to use the roads. According to a report by the Victorian auditor General a couple of months ago, public transport fares covered 30% of the cost of operating the public transport system. (And none of the investment cost.)

A cynic might suggest that the fact that public transport is such a money loser is why gov't doesn't try very hard to expand it.

Dr Stone might have another cynical view.
