why don't you use your belay loop? |

I think it also depends on your hand/arm positioning when belaying; connecting through belay loop leaves rope directly in front on of your body (left/right handers use same setup), whereas leg/waist loop brings rope more to the side for abseiling-style rope-wrapping-around body technique.
