Is the toddler actually wearing a harness? It doesn't look like it. I find that more scary than no helmet.

If it's so safe then why does she wear a helmet when her bubba doesn't?

Toproping makes it safer from a falling perspective ie no lead falls but still dependent on belayer/could be loose rock, idiot climber, harness/pack holding baby breaking.

Apparently it was a youth harness attached to her full body harness.
I wouldnt do it with my kids, but wouldnt rage at those who did if they were using all the correct gear to minimise the risk. A helmet on the kid would have been a good idea though...

IMO, People are getting too soft these days (puts on flame suit)

There is a climbing vid out there (cant remember the name) which is all about women climbers and their kids. They are doing something similar, and something even more 'extreme' - climbing whilst heavily pregnant (which I dont support). Good film though!

Why would you carry the extra weight? I want to see the ' dare-devil man climbs cliff with 5kg beer gut' video.

Top roping for the climber actually makes rock fall more likely as you have a rope above you contacting with rock that can break away..

..I wouldn't do it personally but don't really care she does, I'm sure the kid couldn't give a toss either but I did notice in the piccy other people with her so would have been easy to leave kid at the base while she had a quick climb...my first thoughts TBH she was just doing as a "Look at what an awesome mum I am I have a kid and climb"...rather than actually giving the kids an experience...ie using the kid as a trophy....but in saying that if that the worst thing she does as a mother it not all that bad.

It's just the logical solution to the problem of climbing with kids that is discussed in the "For the chicks out there" thread.

If she was climbing some massive bit of choss I think that would be a bit different but toproping on a crag that gets bulk traffic wouldn’t be much of an issue in regards to falling rocks. Yes it can happen, but it would be pretty slim. Again, the kid should probably be wearing a helmet, but thats another discussion.

I think what she did was probably as dangerous for the kid as going for a ride on a bike, or climbing a tree. Actually, tree climbing is probably more dangerous!

I have always planned to do this with my kids one day. If done correct and safely then I think it would be a really blast for my kids and great weight training for me.
I don't see any harm.
