After a lovely sunny July day of climbing at the Dam Cliffs with my girlfriend (not really a climber), we'd ticked all the do-able things for her so i convinced her that a quick run through Dargans canyon would be a great way to finish the day. I'd done it once before, a few years ago. It was 3 pm when we started and i was sure there were no swims, maybe waist high water at most. I told her the same. She was wary but agreed, as long as there was no swimming.
We set off, in shorts, t-shirts, fleece jumpers, making good speed, until the first swim. Crap, forgot about that one. You can imagine the conversation. I promised her it was the only one, definitely and we pushed on.
A few minutes later, the canyon closes over and there's the down-climb over the jammed trees under the waterfall. We both slipped off into the water, slightly more than waist deep. At this stage we were both shivering uncontrollably, soaked, looking at the last swim. I wasn't getting good vibes from my partner. We pushed on.
Finally there's the climb up the tree with spikes in it (which i'd also forgot about, missed, then had to return to), i don't know how we got up it but we eventually got back to the car and sat in front of the heating on full bore until beautiful warmth returned.
It was a quiet ride home.
