A heli, like a plane, can glide indefinitely. The ratio isn't as good - about 4:1 - so you have less time to plan a landing, but the upside is incredible maneuverability to make that emergency landing spot, which itself is more likely to present itself, because it can be very small. The heli halts the descent with a flare and touches down (in theory) with very little or no forward speed.
