Um, under a car in Wangaratta was colder than the tent near Blue Lake. The tent was better.
In my car on Cairngorm was also freakin freezing Mr Bigglesworth

The coolest was probably a snowcave near Tasman saddle hut. I had the privelidge of staying with (amongst others) Sven the snow moving machine. He can carve a snow picnic bench in the time it takes for you to find you lunch in your pack. Hence his snowpalace was just that.
It was december in NZ, and we were told we weren't allowed to bring skis and board. When we had 2m of powder (Christmas day), Sven and I were foaming at the mouth. We ended up having shovel races down the glacier. Hardly an epic bivvie, yet memorable enough.

I haven't ever slept in a portaledge. Though on one gramps trip our van broke down and the RACV hired us a minibus so we could climb (there were 8 of us). 2 of us were planning to sleep in the van, so had no tent. The seats in the minibus wouldn't fold down, so we shared a 1 man hammock under the picnic shelter.
