Jono Schimdt solos two new Bogong ice routes onsight
On the weekend of the 31st August Melbourne climber Jono Schimdt daringly soloed two steep mixed rock and ice routes on Pollux Outcrop, Mt Bogong. Both climbs are 30m high and involved sections of drytooling and thin delicate ice which are very seasonally dependant. The conditions this year are descriped as being snowy and Jono reports "many routes had formed that weren't there before. However routes like Slippery Dip and the Icicle were completely buried in what seemed like metres of snow. Overall not really any water ice...just a bit of snow ice and rhime. The snow was really dry which indicated to me that the weather had been too cold and didn't allow any thawing/freezing action."
