Hey mike,
I live in melton so i spend a lot of time out at weribee gorge. I also spend a fair bit of time at the you yangs and camels hump. I am offering my services to you and this site as i know these areas quite well, espesialy weribee. I have climbed 95% of the routes there and i can tell you that the guidebook lies when refering to climbs that deserve stars. I have a few pics and would be happy to help in any way possible. Route info, whatever i can help with. Anything i can do to help this great site get even better.
Thanks,
phil

Phil, that's a great offer. If you'd like to contribute you could:

- Write up the You Yangs. I've never been there so you'd have total creative control of any guide article. Pictures are the key. Have a read of my own guide articles and if you'd like to knock one up along similar lines that would be fantastic. The Youies is a pretty big area, so maybe there is more than one page required, not sure having never been there. I can add the list of routes, which tends to be the boring part of writing the article.

- Add to the Werribee guide page. Just email the pictures and text to me and I'll edit it into the existing document. Try and cover routes I haven't already written about, for example I've said nothing about the lines on the far right of the crag.

- The same with Camels. The guide page is lacking in good photos. Plus I've said nothing really about the routes at the lower area near the road.

Pictures at 800x600 pixels are what I'm using with smaller versions within the document itself. If you've got a lot of stuff, use WinZip to wrap up the files, then email it over as an attachment. If we're talking megs and megs worth, you might need to burn a CD and postal mail it, or put it on a web or FTP site so I can download it.

Once again, a very generous offer, and I'd be most appreciative of any help. I've sort of sworn to myself that I'd get out to every Victorian crag in existence and review them all, but I can see now that this goal is going to take years without help from others.

Rest assured whatever you provide will be posted fully accredited to yourself. If anybody else would like to contribute, in any fashion, please do! Bill from the VCC reads this forum, and the guide articles, so anything you add might well turn up in print, in the next VCC guide.

PS: Phil if your offer extends to showing us around the Youies some day that would be cool. Weather is looking good for this Sunday I believe.

Ive probably been to the youies 7 or 8 times, so not that much but whenever weve gone there weve usualy headed straight for the easier clasics. I'm keen to het out on sunday. However i'm carless at the moment so i will get back to you before then. I will try to organise some stuff for the bits of weribee you havnt covered, but i will wait till i get a few more photos. Same for ca,els hump.

Cool. I've added Neil's pics over here. 500 odd climbs at the Youies? Gees, this area is going to take quite a few trips to write up, even as a brief overview. Feel free take a stab at it Phil. We can work Neils pics into the article as well as your own. Anyway whatever you can do. I'll have to get down there and check the place out myself.

I think the youies are some of the worst climbs in the state. i can't believe people are still putting up new routes there. Places like Mt Alex are SOOOO much nicer. If the youies has 500 routes - i rekon about 20 might be worthwhile.

the youies.....with names like "urinal wall" you cant go wrong

i agree with nm...unless you live really close, why bother...there are much nicer places to be.

nice place to go for a run though

Urinal wall has a couple of nice routes on it. But i have to agree with neil, the climbing aint that good, and the bolting is worse. I mean i know it's a slab, but two bolts on a 35m route is just a bit crazy for my liking.

Looks like this Sunday (20th Oct), there will be four of us free to climb from up here. The Youies has been mentioned as a destination, though it's like 2 hours drive away for us (only 1 hour for you Melbournites). If we leave at 7.30am we might get there at 9.30am with any luck. Sounds like you guys aren't giving it a very good review, but seeing as it's one of the few places within day trip reach (just), that we haven't yet been to, we might still head down.

Phil, are you keen to come across and show us around/climb with us? If not. Which areas would you suggest for the best concentration of good climbs (lets say in the 15 to 22 grade range). I'd like to head straight for the good stuff and not waste time hiking into crap places, so as to make the most of limited time in the day.

Anyone else up for it?

Owen - that sounds like a great plan! My mobile is 0428528572. We'll try and be there at 9.30am but sometimes it's hard to get the lads moving of an morning, so don't be too suprised if we are a tad later. Can you suggest a meeting place? Bear in mind we haven't been there before, though I have the guide book.

Neil - I assume you mean't "Gravel Pit Tor"?, as per your photos? Thanks for those, by the way. I've used them on the beginings of the guide/review over here.

Phil Nev & Joe - Are you keen to come also. Can you car pool with Owen?

Pat - what's up? Are you studying too hard?

I'm keen to go. Not a huge fan of the youies but keen to meet up with you guys. 9.30 sounds like a good meeting time, since were all probably unorganised, we could just decide where to head when we get there.

Hey mike, i went to camels hump today and tried a couple of the routes you recomneded, Poxbow was awesome! The pro was near perfect, and the climbing was nice and exposed. Deffinitly a must do for the area. I also TR'd the 18 next to it, Split images i think it's called. The hardest part is the slab at the start, pulling the roof is quite easy. This climb is also really good. Had a look at bloodline, looks sweet but wasnt feeling that confident. Maybe next time.

Keep up the good recomendations......

Dude you missed a great trip. There were five of us in the end. Myself, Ben and Brett down from Bendigo and Owen & Phil Nev up from Melbourne. We ticked 9 climbs over three areas, and definiately got a lot more in than had we rocked up without the guys to show us around.

The Youies reminds me a bit of Mt Beckworth. Lots of little areas spread out. Course grainte. Some nice slabs and jam cracks. Plus a lot of routes that were way over our abilities. We hit Urinal, Gravel Pit Tor, and Night Fall Pinnacle. The first was shorter than I expected, but had some good slab lines. Gravel Pit seemed the most popular of the three, with a couple of grade 16/17 trad lines that we really enjoyed. We briefly considered the 20 slab, but the first bolt was a death sentence away, and even the top rope set up didn't look too inviting, so we headed for Night Fall. Here I passed up a delightful grade 16 crack lead, which looked yuk from the ground, but turned out to be very enjoyable. Next time! We TRed a grade 19 that everyone but Owen seemed stuggle on. Phil mapped the sequence, finding a undercling to high reach crimp that paved the way for subsequent successes.

All up a very enjoyable trip, I think primarily because the five of us got along really well. Like Beckworth, the Youies has hundreds of routes. It pays to have a local point you in the direction of the good stuff.

nice job on the article phil, though i disagree on you statement "They are all terrible and should be avoided at all costs. However, if you are a dedicated masochist you may enjoy them." about the easy route near the throne. then again i do enjoy those sort of routes!
otherwise the article was great and filled the gap about the climbs at the george.

good job

joe
