Gear slings, or rack up on harness?

I use a gear sling 95% of the time.

I rack my cams on it (and hexes if I'm carrying any, which is not so often these days) and keep the draws and wires on my harness.
I don't like the 'dragging' feeling of too much weight on my harness.

Yes sometimes it can flip around but it offers some flexibility, you can unclip gear with your other hand sometimes, which is difficult if you're holding on with your right hand but needing the piece you racked on the right, and vice versa.

I've tried the opposite method, which is to rack the draws on the sling, and cams on the harness, but I didn't like it for all of the above reasons.

Unless you're doing big wall, you really don't need a gear sling PROVIDED that you get a harness with a good haul loop at the back for all the belay junk.

unfortunately most of the new harnesses seemed designed for sport and really cheap out on the 5th and all important belay gear loop.

I use one of these with a full trad rack and have found it useful. Contrary to just using a tape sling or similar, gear tends to stay put and not move around to much, so not throwing your balance out.

I thought the haul loop was put there to break your coccyx.

OK, so I may be prone to exageration with the knees, but still, even an adjustable gear sling isn't going to cover the range of size between you and I! On the harness, it's all out the way, stays where I put it, and as I inevitablly carry double everything, I can put a bit of each size on either side and I can always rack the number 5 on the side I guess won't be going in the crack. I do occasionally re rack mid route because of that problem.

Yes I have heard of it.
You must be old too :-)
The only time I have ever used it is in practise rescue scenarios...

We are talking about a gear sling Wendy. Come around to my place and I will adjust my gear sling on you to see if it fits okay.

Well he is a man but what sets him apart is that he said what all the rest of us mere males were thinking. ;))
