I received an email from Oliver Strauch, a friend of the deceased.
He tried to register here in the forum, but hasn't any password yet. Therefore he ask me to post a message:

The name of the deceased climber is Leo Schrass. He was known as a experienced and careful climber, who does not take any risk while climbing.
In the name of Oliver Strauch, I like to thank all the members of the forum for their condolence and their deep sympathy. All his friends will miss him.

My mistake, only saw the first page. Terrible news, tragic to know that this can happen even when all precautions are taken. Sincere condolences to Oliver, family and friends.

A real tragedy. John Donne's "No man is an island..." comes to mind for a stranger dying in a place so familiar to me.

It seems that the climb was Soweto. No clear details apart from fall on the top half of the climb.
Soweto was my first guess. The top half is sustained with no good rest points and no "beyond-doubt" runners.

From my understanding, the climb was Diazepam. I'm curious to hear the exact events surrounding such a tragic accident.

Interestingly, there was a gear ripping fall on Soweto on the day before this incident. The piece that pulled was an small RP that tracked out of the rock, it was placed about the horizontal break. I believe it may have already been loaded previously. The climber was caught by the next piece down situated below the break and the fall was otherwise uneventful.

The fact that I was at Summer Day Valley the day before has brought this tragedy closer to home.

are there still those railings near the bases of some climbs?

Today we buried Leo in his home town. Parents, sister, his family and quite a lot of friends, colleges from his education to a chemical-technical assistant and post-graduated study of chemistry came to take leave to Leo. He was on his way fulfilling a dream, after education and very successful study, just before to start the working live, see some of the world, visit different countries and meet different people on a one year trip, which he started 3 month ago.

However, it was a real tragedy. May the climb was diazepam, but doesn't help when you rely to a hook which dislodged - so the story I know – just when he turned around to his companion asking for another carabineer, falling down backwards, hit his companion on his fall down, while the second hook dislodged also, no chance for his companions to belay him. 15 m are too short to catch someone, but to long not to be uninjured. He fell down on a rock, where he suffered the deadly head injuries, 1 or 2 m along and around was duff. Misfortune! We could ask only: why? why Leo? Leaving so many sad people...

To all of you, take care on your trips and climbs….

Your pain of loss is communicated.

I feel hurt for you, and Leo's friends / family.

Indeed.

(Thanks for the update Oliver).

A young man's life, so full of potential, cut short. The sadness of his family and friends is shared by all of us.

Another reminder that this pastime of ours can be deadly. Be careful, people.

Thanks for taking you time to post a message here Oliver. It is always good to hear from people who knew the climber.

Rest in peace Leo.

I've never climbed in this area but I notice that this route has three bolts on the top section. Did two of the bolts actually pull out ?

Thanks for sharing that with us Oliver.

I'm sure Leo will live on in the memories of his family and friends. Clearly he had been blessed with many good friends.

The dangerous part is actually getting to them. The last time I did the route there was still a fixed peg before the bolts, which I think had been replaced. I'm guessing this was one of the pieces.

hallo,

Wunderbar!
Andrea

Gruß, Tobi

A slightly better translation.....

Hello,

I am Peter, the father of Leo Schrass. My wife Andrea is standing next to me and our son Tobi has shown us the way to this forum.

The three of us have said farewell to Leo in Melbourne with great dignity and taken him home in an urn. On Tuesday, the 29th of May, we have given him to the soil on the cemetery of his hometown Birkenweiler. A lot of people have accompanied him and us doing this.

Most of them were young people which I had never seen before. [They were] as young and unknown as most of all those who have posted in the forum. Their and your grief, shock, your honest compassion and your solidarity are helping us and are giving us a lot of strength. We thank you from deep in our hearts for that.

I want to use this opportunity to remind you of Timo and Tatjana, Leos companions in the accident. They held his hand up to his death in the Alfred’s in Melbourne. It is a great honour for me to have found these great young people as friends.

With big gratefulness to them and you I send you my kindest wishes,

Peter

Peter asked me also to translate, I gave my best to be as close as possible to the German. There is already a good translation, but now I've written mine too.

Jochen

Hello,
I’m Peter, the father of Leo Schrass. My wife Andrea is standing besides me. Our other son Tobi showed how to access this forum.
The three of us came to Melbourne to see Leo, and we have brought his ashes home in dignity. On Tuesday the 29th of May, we buried Leo in the cemetery in his home town of Birkweiler. Many people escorted him on his final journey. The majority of them were young people I’ve never seen before; as young and unknown before as those who have posted in this forum.
Their and your sadness, consternation, honest compassion, and solidarity is good for us and gives us strength. We would like to thank you all with all our heart.
I would like here to acknowledge Timo and Tatjana, Leo’s companions when his accident occurred. They held his hand until he passed away in the Alfred hospital. It is an honour to have these brilliant young people as friends now. With thanks’ I would like to send my best regard to them and to you all.

Peter

I assent to Peter’s statement. Leo’s gift to unite people continues after his death, wonderful

Andrea

Greetings from Tobi
