Yeah, I'm with BUPA, we get 2 trips per annum for our couple household, includes air services.

So if we reach 2x I'll just pay $50 for the membership.

x10 that's $500
Do you need an ambulance more than once every 10 years?

Pop $500 into a savings account, build up some interest over time - after 10 years (if you have not unfortunately passed out in a pharmacy) treat yourself, to a new rack ;)

Looks like rules for have changed in NSW - Helicopter now apparently same as ambulance:

Charges for NSW residents
From 1 July 2017 NSW residents requiring road, fixed wing aircraft or helicopter or a combination of these, from the scene of an accident, illness or injury to a public hospital or other destination nominated by NSW Ambulance will be charged a call out fee of $372 plus an additional charge of $3.35 per kilometre or part thereof.

Scarier:
Charges for non NSW residents
Residents of other States or Territories, which are not a party to a Reciprocal Rights Agreement for ambulance services (currently Queensland and South Australia do not have an agreement)
Road, Fixed Wing, Helicopter Call-out - $714

Not sure about Victoria though - $1100 ??

I'm assuming the winky face means you're pulling the piss ;) ;)

I had never ridden in an ambulance until this year, and there have been two seperate occasions, each costing me over $3000. For the sake of 50 bucks, its a no-brainer.
I've got private health insurance which I hardly ever use, but it was cheaper to pay the premium for the year than the ambulance cost. I understand that this may be different for other people.

Ambulance cover in SA is about $90 which extends Australia-wide for an extra $10. I've been paid up since '03 when I had a ride from Arapiles to Melbourne and I received a bill for $6600. I suspect it would cost more now. I needed an ambulance again last year when I was knocked off my pushbike. I wasn't the one making the calls, my instinct would be to try to get home or get to help myself.

* I should add it was a chopper ride from Arapiles to Melbourne.

I have 5-year membership with Ambulance Victoria. Current renewal cost of that is $230. Actually the same cost as 5 years of annual membership ($46/annum) if fees don't rise over 5 years. But it's one thing I don't have to remember to renew every year.Covers me throughout Australia. Have to live in Victoria or some adjacent towns in NSW and SA and have permanent or temporary Australian residency.

Had a flight back from Melbourne in a fixed wing air ambulance after some treatment about 9 years ago. I think the fee was around $3500 - I got an invoice and sent it back with my membership number.

Those with private health cover who think they're covered need to carefully read the fine print in the policy. A lot of insurers only cover for one trip per injury, a friend broke her leg, got ambulance to nearest hospital who then sent her on to a larger hospital for specialist care (I'm talking rural here, bit of distance between hospitals). GMHBA only paid for one, at least she had the choice of which one - $5000 or $9000. Ambo cover is a no brainer in aus.

Last time I checked in with Medibank, they covered all air ambulance transport that's authorised by the insurer. I called and asked if that meant I needed to ring them before I got airlifted and they said yes. I asked what happens if I'm unconscious after a car accident and get airlifted. They said they wouldn't cover it.

So they basically don't cover it, no-one is ever going to ring their insurer while they're dealing with an accident. Would anyone even know what number to contact them on to get approval?

Many years ago I worked in health insurance. While things may have changed it used to be you would have a certain number of “emergency” ambulance trips covered by your policy, per year. If your ambo ride wasn’t considered an emergency, you’d foot the bill.

Many years ago a mate was knocked out at Mt Baw Baw while we were boarding, and was airlifted to hospital. From memory the bill was approx $5500...

Ambulance membership costs next to nothing and gives you peace of mind.
