I have been meaning to comment on this bit of television footage for a while. Watched it again the other day just to make sure that I wasn't being overly negative after my first viewing... but the reality is that it is shit.

I assume that the ABC took charge of the whole story and the editing as well as ignoring any ideas and advice from the 'Get a Dog Up Ya' film crew because I can't imagine the 'Get a Dog Up Ya' team would produce such shit judging from their excellent short climbing film Augmentium.

The Totem Pole piece is totally robbed of any sense of story and tension by random shots and confused direction. When you have a summit like the Totem Pole you certainly don't start your story by tyroleaning across to it via some rope that has magically appeared there and then abseiling to the base and top-roping the first pitch. Even I was scratching my head wondering what the f--- is going on. I can only wonder what non-climbers were thinking (come to think of it, I am a non-climber).

As for the interviews with the climbers Libby Sauter and Garry Phillips... well they lacked punch too. The only lively interview was with CJ - who was meant to be the cameraman!

Given the opportunity to promote the making of a Tassie climbing film to a wider audience, it was a pity this story and footage wasn't done a whole lot better.

2 out of 5 stars.

PS. I have no doubt that the Tassie climbing film will be a zillion times better. Just re-watch this to learn what not to do.

Well, Simey is right about Augmentium anyway. Could do with a bit less dream narration maybe and more climbing, perhaps.

I thought the dream narration in Augmentium was very entertaining. In fact that whole short film was extremely well edited with respect to every scene adding to the story and nothing dragging on.
