Seems WWS was right and the names already been taken. How about we call it Lord of the Rings Lesser Variant? And lets give it 29 since we've established that's about what Kim was climbing back around then.

...davej...mate...fair dinkum ...just when I thought u were the intelligensia of Chockstone......one of the wisest of the long term Arapiles-Natimuk 'scene ' ...

>>>the names already been taken. ...

hero already enlightened us about all that ....BUT ANYWAY...there are climbs of the same name all over the country ...the world ...u can have 2 climbs with the same name at one crag ... the different grades will make it obvious and not cause any confusion ...in a guide book ...like Ewbank sed ... the description will spell it all out ...

>>>How about we call it Lord of the Rings Lesser Variant?

...about as much as ura ' lesser varient ' of daveC...

>>>lets give it 29 since we've established that's about what Kim was climbing back around then.

...OK well thats gotta be a troll...ITS 31 UP TO THE SLAB...Kim worked the the route for 4 years ...AND DID CLIMB IT !!! ....WETHER U LOT LIKE IT OR NOT !!!...he picked up sh#t loads of muscle memory, beta and perma chalk tick marks to make it happen ....the only other 31 in the world in 1984 was the one put up be Wolfy that year ... so U an damo need to take a deep breth and get to grips with the fact that Kim Carrigan was at the top of world climbing (not just with grades but with world travel and interacting with and contributing to ...all the major climbing scenes around the world at that time ..

...ur logic is like davej says he just climed a new 21 ... and everyones like ....AAAWWWWW NO WAY !!!!... davej did Addiction ...therefore the new route must be 33 !!!

Lord of the rings adds a grade 25 slab to Kim's GRADE 31 HISTORICALLY TOTALLY IMPORTANT MEGA EFFORT ...

YOU guys are re-writing history ...NOT ME !!!...

...thanks for the reply davej ....now go an finish the Inqueersition ...

; ))

...AND EVERYONE PLEASE GET IT CLEAR IN UR HEDS...ROUTES 2 , 3 & 4 are not varients of .. but are extensions to ...KIM CARRIGAN'S SERIOUS YOUNG LIZARDS ( 31 ) ...possibly the first 31 on the planet ...

True.

Look I am a KC fan. I had an EMC (I think) ad poster of Kim on Height of Fashion on the wall, so definitely thought highly of him. But to carry on about him climbing a route 3/4 the way as a tick is a tad optimistic. He should have added chains before the slab like done numerous times elsewhere around the world when the first ascentionist can't get to the anchors!

Same. I think Carrigan put up cool routes, definitely pushed local standards at the time, and sounds like he was a psyched and interesting character.

However, it does seem like his contribution (although quite large) gets exagerated compared to those who came before and after him. And I'm not talking about our reptilian friend, it's the Victorian run climbing media/mafia who have been fixated on the New Wave for 40 years.

from wiki :
'...Of the Australian definition, Peter Hartcher of the Sydney Morning Herald writes, "(Australian) citizens know that some among them will have more power and money than others... But according to the unspoken national ethos, no Australian is permitted to assume that he or she is better than any other Australian. How is this enforced? By the prompt corrective of levelling derision. It has a name—The "Tall Poppy Syndrome". The tallest flowers in the field will be cut down to the same size as all the others. This is sometimes misunderstood... It isn't success that offends Australians. It's the affront committed by anyone who starts to put on superior airs...'

Kim never put on airs of superiority ... he put on airs of CONFIDENCE ...

....so stop dissing Kim's SUCCESS !!!!! ...that's technically VERY UN-AUSTRALIAN ...

but didn't clip the chains!

According to Ewbank who created our lovely grading system:

Grading takes the following into consideration. Technical difficulty, exposure, length, quality of rock, protection and other smaller factors. As these are more or less all related to each other, I have rejected the idea of 3 or 4 grades, i.e. one for exposure, one for technical difficulty, one for protection etc. Instead the climb is given its one general grading, and if any of the other factors is outstanding, this is stated verbally in the short introduction to that climb

Onto or before the slab is irrelevant. The grade is for the whole climb and not just a technical grade for the crux. If he didn't clip the anchor, he didn't climb grade 31.

With your logic, I have a number of routes where I peeled above the crux; a couple of times staring at the chains just inches from my nose I can claim!

Don't know why you're bothering to engage him Spiritual One - there is no-one else (not even Carrigan) who would claim that "Lord of the Rings Lesser Variant (29/30)" actually qualifies as being a real route.

Our saurian friend has also plainly failed to take into account the fact that that slab move is actually quite hard coming where it does - and is in fact a large part of the reason why the route is 31 (albeit soft at the grade with the Wackford start).
