Thanks guys! Yeah, a plan B sounds in order.

Latest update is an evacuation warning currently issued for Buffalo Ck and surrounding areas due fire activity increasing with erratic winds at the moment.

https://emergency.vic.gov.au/respond/#!/warning/12594

The VicEmergency app also shows a burnt area from a spotfire located east of Lake Buffalo up towards the summit of Mt McLeod (overlooks Myrtleford and Porepunkah), at northern end of Mt Buffalo plateau. This no doubt originated from the convection cloud that formed over the main fire yesterday which spotted ahead of itself.

Recent rain has significantly dampened fire activity in the Mt Buffalo area.

VicTraffic website was last updated 3.40 pm 25/01/20 and listed the road up to The Chalet as closed, though I heard on local ABC Radio that it is likely to be opened on Tuesday 28 January...

The park is still listed as closed on Parks' site: http://www.parks.vic.gov.au/places-to-see/parks/mount-buffalo-national-park

You are right ajf.
ABC Radio interviewed the Incident Controller for the (Buffalo area) Abbeyard fire, today, and he wasn’t hopeful of ParksVic opening the NP any time soon...

Thanks for that Mr P.
Much of it I had come across before, but there were some new gems of info that I was unaware of, within it.

Probably should have its own thread, but Booroomba Rocks, a climbing area in Namadgi NP on southern outskirts of Canberra got burnt out during the last few days...

Fire front was only 5 km from Tharwa before today’s terrible fire conditions exacerbated the out of control bushfire.

Mount Buffalo National Park Reopening up to Cathedral Saddle
Access into the park will be through to the Cathedral Saddle car park but all visitor facilities and most tracks north of there are open and accessible. There a few areas in the north that will have restricted access until we can undertake further assessments and rehabilitation works – please refer to the attached map. These areas are:
• Reservoir Road
• Rocky Creek Track
• Mt McLeod Track
• Macs Point Track from near the Leviathan
• Long Plain Track to Mt Dunn and surrounds

As far as I can see, the map posted 3/2 is still the most up to date regarding park access? My reading of the map is that the gorge is open?

I went up Mt Buffalo as a motorcycle outing yesterday, for a look around post the fires earlier this year.

From where the tar ends (former Cresta Inn site), heading out towards The Horn, the area has taken a massive hit from the fires with many of the snowgums not showing any epicormic growth, which normally I'd expect to be well and truly happening by now, as is the case with trees recovering up Corryong way.

Quite a surreal landscape with bare earth in abundance, sticks remaining which were once trees, and quite a bit of snow still about from the last strong cold front of about a fortnight ago.

Surprisingly the dirt road to The Horn is open and there was plenty of traffic up there, especially for a Monday. I'm glad I didn't go on the weekend when the crowds were truly out and about!
I did not observe much social distancing happening either... and was quite amazed to see one group of a dozen people all crowding shoulder to shoulder for a group-selfie photo with the burnt out valley across to Back Wall in the background.

There were technicians working on the phone communications tower adjacent the carpark, so the temporary arrangement that they had there after the fire is probably upgraded now back to its former status.

I didn't check any climbs, but can guarantee that any low bolts would definitely have had flames heating them during the fires...

The Chalet area seemed its usual self, including the Adventure Guiding Company present in abundant numbers.

On the subject of Cresta Valley.

According to local ABC Radio this morning, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced as part of the economic recovery post Covid19, the construction of five eco-pods at Cresta Valley costing $1.5 million, for luxury tourism accomodation.
They are allegedly portable and will be constructed locally.

At the same time expressions of interest will be sought for investing in and running the Buffalo Chalet cafe.
The initial cafe will be temporary, until the fully revamped Mansfield Cafe can be reconstructed.

This will be a first step in a staged redevelopment of the Chalet for accomodation.

Community action for the Chalet apparently has a local Facebook group, with a link to the Price Waterhouse & Cooper proposals about the progressive development options.

(Post edit: I will cross-post this to the Chalet thread if I can find it).

Snow gums apparently have several regenerative options,

With increasing intensity of disturbance, resprouting first occurs from the accessory
buds in the small-diameter branchlets of the crown, followed by the epicormic buds
in the medium- and large-diameter branches and stems, and then from the buds of
the lignotuber.
(CSIRO Journal of Botany)

So if there is little evidence of epicormic growth, maybe look down at the bulbous root system. That said, repeated frequent fires prolly ain’t gonna help. I’m no botanist, maybe someone who knows might like to post.

On the topic of luxury eco pods... at least these are in the park somewhere pretty. There is a development here in The Blue Mountains to build glamping tents at Parklands Gardens Estate, which is quite funny since it’s a hellhole of invasive weeds in the middle of town, lol. Only $350 a night tho!

Yah thanks for posting Ian, appreciated.

You can definitely see the variation between multi-stemmed thin-trunk snow gums in some areas and the gnarly old single thick gums (that hurt when you plough into them on skis!), and the explanation about fire pattern makes sense when you've got multiple post-fire recovery strategies.

Now to explain why there always seems to be a perfectly gnarled old thick stemmed snow gum accompanying every high country hut, conveniently positioned for composing photos...
