The Weekend Australian has a photo of Bec Hopkins hanging off Kachoong on the Front Page. Apparently Arapiles is on the Great Dividing Range which is strange because I'm driving down there tomorrow and Google Maps has me doing a 1000 km trip from Sydney rather than just driving up to Blackheath. Bloody Google Maps.

The Geology section of the Mentz/Tempest Arapiles guidebook says Arapiles is the very end of the great dividing range. I don't have a copy handy but it's a good read.

I'd say that honour goes to the Grampians. So does wiki. Arapiles isn't there because of localised crust uplifting. It is there because the rock got hardened by magma intrusion underneath. There are plenty of other volcanic induced formations south and west of Arapiles including a bunch of volcanos. These are aren't part of the Great Dividing Range Either.

When Steve Tremont and Barry Higgins walked the full length of The Great Divide watershed they started at Dergholm, which is south of Edenhope, and 53 weeks later arrived at Cape York. I don't believe they went anywhere near Arapiles.

I read the Araps guidebook and it doesn't whether it's part of the GDR, just that it's part of the Grampians Group. Anyway it was actually a pretty good article, I'm glad the public has finally been exposed to the ubiquitous Kachoong shot :)
