Highest peak - Mons Olympus - 27,000 metres. Also a canyon system about 4000 km long and between 2000 and 7000 metres deep. Gravity is about a third that of earth so you should hit the deck a little softer. Possibly the best crag in the solar system although it lacks the atmosphere of Arapiles. Also, some areas are closed to climbing to protect the breeding habitat of the Martian Rock Wallaby.

and you could have really long pitches using skinny ropes.
it might be a bit hard to talk to your partner though.

Unfortunately, with a crater 80km wide and 600km diameter at base "Olympus Mons" just happens to be the biggest VOLCANO in OUR WHOLE SOLAR SYSTEM!!! so i for one will not be going anywhere near the thing!!!!!

Olympus Mons may be the largest volcano in our solar system, but it's also the largest extinct volcano... I don't believe it's done much of anything for the last... oh, billion years or so. So no, no real barrier to climbing the thing! ;-)

Oh an its also 25km or so high, so even if there was a useful atmosphere on Mars you would still need a spacesuit to climb most of it.

A few months back there was a "Mars Special" on ABC TV. It pointed out the problems that remote controlled vehicles would have in exploring the craggier parts of the planet, so they decided to have a practice Mars climbing expedition. They went to some island that was basically a big extinct volcano (I forget which one) and went climbing in "space suits". Steve Bell (who gave a slide show for the VCC last year) was one of the climbers and there was some French female called Catherine Destiville [sp?] who seemed to climb OK

I stumbled upon the doco purely by accident (surfing channels and suddenly saw footage of a young Destiville soloing).

The replicated the scenario well, including forcing the group to live in a cramped structure (replicated space station) and verture outdoors including climbing in restrictive space suits!!

... that tapered down to nice pressurised climbing shoes? ;-)
