Abseil Technique

Interesting abseil technique from Bear Grylls on "Man vs Wild" last night:

1. Build up strength by feasting on left-overs in fresh bear poo. Be sure to rinse thoroughly. Be confident that you can digest what a bear can't.

2. Throw boulder off top of cliff and time how long it takes to hit bottom. Hope no one else has rapped in before you. Calculate height of cliff, assuming boulder falls at a constant speed of 50 feet per sec.

3. Find anchor. Ignore trees near top of cliff and find solid tree at least half a metre in diameter. Safety first.

4. Fashion makeshift harness and ATC. Attack prussic to rope above harness ... but don't attach it to harness.

5. Start rap. Act surprised when calculations prove to be in error and rope doesn't reach bottom of cliff.

6. Start swing pendulum, while hanging onto prussik. Grab small tree on ledge with free hand, at the apex of swing.

7. Release prussik and while hanging from small tree with the other hand, reach into pack, extract knife and CUT THE ROPE. Admit that you usually don't like doing this.

8. Fortunately there's a path from small tree to bottom of cliff.

Oh wow. Do they teach this in scouts?

He would probably claim it's his SAS training ... and I wouldn't argue with him as he has a black belt in Shotokan karate.
He's also climbed Everest ... hopefully his technique going up is better than that coming down.

He sounds like a bit of a fraud. Climbing everest doesn't necessarily mean he has much technical climbing knowledge, I was amazed on meeting a 'famous' mountaineer of his aparent lack of climbing knowledge.

I reckon I'd eat zebra sushi any day, rather than bear poo.

Ray Meers is the real survival tough guy though:

I'll never forget the photo sequence in an article about Treseder in Wild, years ago. It has him looking dorkey, in a suit, behind the counter of a bank. Then it switches to him walking down the street in his suit. Then he is in a telephone both, getting changed out of his suit. Then, voila!, he is there in front of the telephone booth, dressed in a pair of Stubbies with a headlamp on his noggin, compass hanging around his neck and wearing Dunlop Volleys.

Super Tiger-walking Dorkman

It was like, wow ! I wish I could be like that guy.

NOT!

He did some pretty amazing feats, though fashion and feats are two different things.

Sorry to break it to you mate but he was found to be a fraud. He was seen riding a bike on one of his "amazing " tiger walks, but denied it.
The amazing greek ultra marathon runner Yanous Kouros (sp) who has trained his entire life holds the world record for 400km. It is set indoors on a flat, firm, even track. He carries no food, water or equipment but has all the support you could imagine such as masseur, dietician, pace setters, cooks etc plus the benifit of a bed to sleep in when resting. He is only slightly faster ( a couple of hours) at this distance than our "Hero" who has to carry food water etc and cope with uphills and uneven ground without the benifits of masseurs cooks etc.
One of his amazing feats was to rescue a girl in a canyoning accident who had supposedly being hanging in a harness in a waterfall for at least 6 hours. ( as climbers we know already this is bullshit and she's dead) he rescues her singlehandedly as her boyfriend has waited at the carpark where he found our " Hero" and then walks her out of the canyon for 3-4 hours, puts her in the car and sends her home with her boyfriend. Did I mention this was on the way from driving home from one of his desert tiger walks where he walked for 280 kms non stop across the desert and conveniently stops at this particular carpark because now 1 hour from home he needs to sleep.
On top of it the boyfriend doesn't ring the police or emergency services for help for our "hero" nor take her to a hospital to get checked out but just goes home, how convenient for our "hero", no medical report.
Everyone loves to have someone they can look at and go WOW thats amazing, But this guy isn't it, hes just a liar and there's not much I dont like more than a liar

The next post contains most of what I was talking about. My numbers are a little out, I hadn't read that article in about 12 months so you will have to forgive me.
The general underline is still what counts. The guy is full of it

That is hilarious reading! Why didn't anyone question him for so long?

People were shaking their heads for a long time but it wasn't untill all the BS was collected together in his book that it really became obvious. The book itself is p1ss funny stuff.

My favourite Tresseder story

Consists of him soloing the Caroline face of Mt Cook NZ.

After just completing a TMC (technical mountaineering course) with 1 borrowed ice tool.

Not bad effort

I only got to read the initial reports and left for an extended overseas sojourn about then.
Never did get to hear the followup exposure.
Well, well, fancy that ...
Thanks for the enlightenment.
