There was an interesting article on rope strengths published by the UIAA a few years ago, google it.

I read somewhere that steel is more suseptable to stress fractures than aluminium (not sure where though)

Most ropes and slings are made of UV stable materials these days anyway.

I'm pretty sure that the results of the test were written up on the rec.climbing newsgroup. You may not find it on the BD website. Do a search for this on the newsgroup rec.climbing and you should come up with the result you require. Very interesting reading.
