Blink 182 and green day are not multi-instrumental gentle souls like David Sylvian,
either.

I've only just recently started listening to music while climbing (training really), I'd never listen to music outdoors. I'm there partly for the quiet, so music won't help much.
I train best to similar music as I listen to while using MS Excel. IE, metal usually, Tool, RATM, Butterfly Effect (soft, almost glam metal), some of the early proggers, Yes, King Crimson, and newer prog, Isis and some old Muse.

A couple of things to ad to this.
If it's too loud you're too old.
But then I have ambient noise deafness from too many bands and walkmans/ipods.
Greenday and Blink 182 can't be considered in any discussion of punk music.

Actually the first couple of albums from both bands are pretty good. The Greenday album "1039 Smoothed-out Slappy Hours" was produced by Jesse from Operation Ivy. Sure, it's pretty pop punk, but so is a lot of NOFX and the Descendents.

Not saying they're not good. They're just not in the same league as Pistols, DKs etc.

Last weekend we did new routes on mt greville the theme was DK...
... mostly because my climbing buddy thinks Tool are too trippy and a bit 'hard' for his tastes?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQo4Y92u8a0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PScmRiaZhwk
Having DK blasting out the crappy radio of a shitty beat up car as you come back to the campsite after post-new-route drinks with whiskey in hand serves a good warning signal to other climbers and families of tourists that they should probably move their tents away from the camp site littered with empties and broken tents.
...lucky for them we were to drunk to pick up the dead headless roo on the way back up...
