As for women climbers from the (g)old(en) days there is Ann Pauligk and Julie Tulloch. They were doing first all female ascents of various climbs up to grade 20, often accompanied by Sylvia Lazarnik (sp?) who was from America. Then there is Louise Shepherd who was the first (South) Australian climber to flash 25 (Trojan) and since she has a house in Nati must be a Victorian by now. And of course there is Climbing Jac who has already been mentioned.

Louise is certainly a legand. Her name is on sooo many awesome and scary looking trad lines in the Grampians. That Shepard family must have some good genes...

Coral Bowman. Yeah, I know, she was a Yank visitor, but anyone who gets a photo of themselves topless into a climbing guide (Central Grampians 1975) has to be considered a legend!

I def give props to BA himself (endless support for the Viccy and wider scene), Louise Shepard (not only in climbing but the Araps guide must've been hell) and that old cat who 1st styled up The Edge of Pleasure (just coz it's one of my fave routes!).
I think Neil deserves a mention for his dedication and sheer effort in new routing in Oz, not only at the higher end of things, but ceating great routes for all abilities and also not just on rock but also Alpine...you don't see that much nowadays.
There are some great areas around, it just takes talent and dedication to open them up...and believe me it's hard damn work!!

Hmm... depends on your definition of "legend". According to http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oi=defmore&q=define:legend a "legend" is "a story about mythical or supernatural beings or events".
Since climbers are not actually mythical, we're really looking at "a story about supernatural beings or events"...
I guess "supernatural" means super strong, or super unfrightened, or just plain unusual.
Personally, in the context of climbing legends, I think the definition is "a person or event that contributed significantly to the developement of climbing, or generated a campfire tale that is passed down through the generations."
I haven't been much of a development person myself. I contribute lots to the sport I love so much, but I contribute in a different way. My history has entailed running comps and uni clubs, training people, and grappling with government powers to rekindle what was once the Burnley wall. That sort of thing. The likes of Neil Monteith however, is literally up before the birds, rushing off into the darkness like a crazy person, in search of new and exciting stuff. And then you've got the other kind of legend; the HB kind, that insists on tradding his way through 50m of solid roof climbing to produce "Welcome to Barbados". I definitely agree that these two gentlemen are climbing legends. The rest of us might be repeating routes which to our group of friends, and to the current generation, might be legendary to a degree, but such efforts won't necessarily be remembered in years to come, and are therefore not legendary.
There's my 10c worth! :-)

Let’s get back to the topic… Ross Taylor. Even the bare name oozes power and control! I mean this man
gives new meaning to “smooth and powerful”, as many people describe him. We’re talking about a man
who climbs 28’s with his bare hands!!!! I don’t think I’ve seen anyone as smooth, nor as powerful, let
alone on rock. He is a man who stands out, not quietly, but distinctively. Mostly for.. for.. well for being
himself, in a way that is.. distinctive. Yes, he is an enigma, but there is no doubting what people say - he
is big, thick and powerful. Especially thick. The man simply oozes thickness, in a way other men just
can’t. I’m not boasting here, but I have to say that it’s more than a privelige to have met Ross, even once
to have belayed him on that 20 at Stapylton where he had to pull on the gear to get up it, it’s an honour, I
don’t think it’s too strong a word. Thank you Ross Taylor, for being you. And for not being me.
(there Joe, was that more what you were after?)
