This is a water repelency issue. When the face fabric wets out, the jacket ceases to breathe in that area as water vapour can't pass through a saturated fabric (imagine tring to breathe through a wet towel compared to a dry one).
I'd try the Grangers XT Proofer in a spray on form. That seems to be the best after market DWR restorer out there. Both Mont and Arc'Teryx recommend it for their brands, and thats the stuff the staff at the store I used to work at had best luck with. That said, from memory, Berghaus recommend Nikwax. If it still doesn't work, then it might be that the face fabric is knackered and you'll need a new jacket.
You could try the warranty option if the Grangers treatment fails, but I don't fancy your chances. Berghaus is no longer imported into Australia, and Outdoor Agencies, the company who used to bring it in, don't seem to care much for Berghaus warranties anymore. You might be able to send it back to the UK (Berghaus head office) for assesment, but I'd suggest the frieght costs would offset much of the benefit. |
