The Brisbane Sunday Mail of todays date is reporting that Mark Hately 23 fell when he was less than 50 metres from the summit of Mt. Cook. He suffered head and chest injuries and also a broken ankle. Mark is from Brisbane.

He slid around a hundred metres and he was only saved from certain death when he came to a stop on the only bank of hard snow for miles around. He would have speared over the edge and gone down thousands of metres to his death.

Mountaineers are reporting that he was extremely lucky to have survived a fall from so high up."He`s gone right over the schrund (a crevasse spanning the icecap) and landed on a wee ledge of snow".

The helicopter rescue was the highest ever performed on Mt. Cook and was described as a top end rescue. Kudos to the rescue guys who got in there and performed the reported difficult rescue.

I`m pretty sure that Simon Voss is over there now so I hope he wasn`t up there at the time.

Mark is a member of the UQRC.

Here is hoping that his prognosis turns out for the best. Get well Mark.

Further news is contained in a story on rc.com world climbing news forum.

I quoted my story from the Sunday Mail, it has further details as well.

Dissapointed to hear this, met Mark at Unwin Hut between Xmas and NY's and was in high spirits planning his next climb, nice guy, so hope he is ok and for a speedy recovery.

Shattered to hear this.

If anyone knows what hospital Mark is staying at or how or even if we can get in touch, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. please PM me if you have any info. Phil, do you know if Simon took his mobile to NZ? Can't seem to raise him.

Thanks for posting the links.

Kyle

Yeah I also tried Simons mobile but to no avail. He could also merely be out of range though. I got an email from him last week so he is checking his email on occasion.

Just a quick note to say Mark/Mr Bumble is expected to recover fully.

Looks like he should buy a lottery ticket.
