The commute depends where your journey commences. If you have to battle through city traffic lights, or get to/from the northern, eastern or southern suburbs, it certainly adds to your journey. Measured from the city, some parts of the Grampians are more like 4 hours from Melbourne, possibly a little less with thew new Deer Park bypass road. Areas like the Victoria Range (housing The Gallery, Millenium Caves, Muline Cave etc) and Mt Stapylton (housing Taipan Wall, Summerday Valley etc). As already pointed out, sounds like you'll be attending a uni in the Western suburbs (Footscray campus perhaps??), and you will probably live near your uni. So you'll be on the correct side of the city for a commute to Arapiles or the Grampians :-)
