Jono Schimdt and I headed for the multipitch slabs of Ben Nevis on Saturday. We both needed to get into shape for our Mt Aspiring alpine mission in Feb so we needed long, runout and foot taxing routes. The Red Rock slabs certainly came up with the goods. After getting very lost amoungst the fire roads In Mt Cole Forest we finally found the area. With the help of this site we found the rap chain with ease and simul rapped down. We did three routes Yasser Direct Finish (17), The Drums (18) and another 17. Overall I found the climbs quite nice and easy for the grade. I was expecting the standard horribly sustained friction of Buffalo but instead this area has lots of edges and rounded jugs. The runouts are big - but usually the climbing is so easy you are just cruising along. I found the protection just felt like a 'bonus' and not actaullty really required as you knew you would be 20m above the bolt in a few minutes! It was stinking hot - stay away if the temps are above 30'C! I reccomend this area to people taking others on their first multipitch route - but only if an experianced climber is leading.
