Defence have recently changed their bushfire management plan. As a result Beecroft Weapons Range will be closed to all day visitors (that’s everyone who comes to the gate) during a total fire ban. Registered campers are allowed to stay at Honeymoon Bay but can’t go anywhere else on the peninsula because Defence close the internal roads (except for the road out).
The rationale behind the changes is that if the campsite is full, then the fire refuge at Honeymoon Bay is at capacity and therefore day visitors are not permitted on to the range.
Total fire bans are announced in the afternoon of the day before they come into force. To check if a Total Fire Ban will come into force visit the Rural Fire Service website via the following link.
Do you think there is any opportunity for expansion of the fire refuge? Maybe something the climbing community could help with? (Not sure if it is an area or a physical structure).
Point Perp seems like a good place for climbing on a hot day, so in some ways it would be a pity to lose this area during hot dry days.
Of course I appreciate the concern, and respect the efforts Defence already go to in order to allow access to the public.
