Climbed there over 20 years ago and many times since. Routes and rock were always 'polished' and slick in some places. Some of the holds on Big Ears, for example, were just as smooth and slippery 20 years ago. Part of it is the very thin film of dust that seems to be the surface of some of the holds. Try to brush it off and it's still there! So I'd avoid any brushing - the rock is fragile enough!
Also, almost any direct sun above 20 degrees makes it much worse! Best on a sunny winters day!
