My understanding is that a significant proportion of the calories in beer come from the alcohol, not the sugars. Although not technically a carbohydrate, ethanol is a very similar molecule. So, the whole low carb beer thing is a bit of a marketing trick. They generally don't publish the actual energy content.

I was curious about this so I did a search and found an American mob that did some tests. http://www.theraven.com/beer.html They found on average, light (as they call low carb full strength beer) was 27% lower in calories. However there are some strong beers on the list marketed as light that contain more calories than weaker beers that are not marketed as light.

In other words it's only low carb relative to the alcohol content. There are some great small breweries making fantastic beer that have to fight against this cleverly marketed mass produced rubbish. The low carb beers I've tried were pretty tasteless.
