It seems a bit weird, considering that BASE jumps seem to often go wrong when fully planned, to expect to be able to deploy a parachute in the event of an unexpected fall. Has this been around long? I must admit to knowing nothing about BASE jumping and parachutes but until he actually stops himself from dying with that parachute I am calling it a bit silly.

I think if you were able to tell if you were going to fall than you might have the reaction to jump away from the cliff. It's a funky way of doing things but I doubt it would get a lot of practitioners.

bit of an "oh whoops" if you come off on the first few pitches hey
i still reckon they should develop the mars-lander style bounce landing into a safety device. a bunch of inflatable balls surround you and you bounce away to safety. or a tall pointy pine tree, but its the thought that counts.

I don't imagine you'd be using that technique on anything under vertical.

There was an interview with sonnie trotter i read a whiel back where he was talking about something similar in deep water solo style using military style parachutes... Pretty cool stuff.

He has saved his own life many times with the BASE chute, on giant high lines above canyons in Utah.
But I hardly think it's a solo when your BASE chute will save your bacon if you fall, It's more along the
lines of a rope solo, but with a BASE chute instead of a rope, makes sense really, lighter, less cluster
f#%^ing, and quicker, especially on the descent!

for a climber of his ability the on foot descent off the eiger is probably more dangerous than the soloing, BASE makes sense.
