Question re scanning photos 17-Jul-2008 At 6:58:40 PM jgoding

Hi, keep in mind the data transfer rate will slow things down a bit. There are high speed (more
expensive ones) which if you are doing a lot of will save you a fair bit of time. Kind of like the
difference between USB and Fire wire (From memory about 10 times the data transfer rate).

Also keep in mind that to get a reasonable size / quality scan you will need a lot of memory on your
computer.

From memory there is a place in Hawthorn or Camberwell which specialises in scanners. it might be
called scanner world or something like that.

If you have any good photos of any really classic Victorian routes (at Arapiles, The Grampians or Mt
Buffalo) I'd love to have a look at them, and perhaps use some in our new "Best of Victoria" guidebook
(due out mid next year) as we are trying to select from quite a wide bunch of excellent photographers
which photos to use. We can't offer corporate "useage" rates, but we can offer you a nice photo credit
and free guide book depending what we deem to be useful to us. maybe shoot me a low res version of
your best ones via e-mail and we can go from there: jgoding@aanet.com.au

PS i've got a mate who might be prepared to scan some in for you at a reasonable rate. He used to do
this as a small business on the side. He has a Nikon Coolscan slide scanner. He can simply burn
them in whatever file format /resolution you choose. It takes quite a while to do. It can also get tricky
with the colour matching. If you want a good, colour accurate result be prepared to pay (a lot) for it.
Most labs charge about $10-20 per slide and colour matching is an hourly rate on top of that from
memory!

There is a mob called "Prism" in North Melbourne who I've used in the past and they are good and
very well priced (for a commercial lab).

"Vanbar" in Carlton are a pro mob who will do a great job and charge you enough to afford their
Ferrari's!

Good luck with it.

Joe
