If you are interested in alpine climbing, mountaineering or adventure please
read on.

As you may be aware, for the last few years we have had the Australian
Mountaineers' Information Network (AMIN) providing a contact point for
Australian-based Mountaineers. It published a quarterly newsletter and ran
slide nights in Sydney and Melbourne. AMIN was essentially driven by one
person in Sydney & it appears that AMIN will lapse. To continue the
momentum of AMIN within Australia and provide a meeting point for
like-minded adventurers we are sending this invitation to attend a meeting
and discuss the avenues in continuing information sharing to the Australian
mountaineering community.

It is felt that starting an Australian Alpine Club from scratch, which has
been attempted before and been unsuccessful, is not the best option. The
more feasible option is to (re-establish an Australian Chapter, specifically
a Melbourne Section and a Sydney Section, of the New Zealand Alpine Club
(NZAC). An Australian Chapter did exist in the 1970s. Currently there are
300 Australian based NZAC members and we would be looking to make use of
this membership and NZAC's wider total membership of 2,500 members and
several full-time staff. NZAC has been contacted and they support the idea
provided there is enough interest (there is an NZAC Committee meeting in
Christchurch on 6th November & NZAC has invited a representative from
Australia to attend). So we would like to call a meeting of interested
mountaineers in Melbourne to gauge the interest.

The meeting is to be held on:

Thursday 28th of October, 2004.
8.00 PM Start at the Australian Gemmological Association Building
380-382 Spencer Street, Melbourne.

Plugging into the NZAC system is a great idea! The I've been a very satisfied member of the "overseas section" for a few years, but we miss out on the all of the local stuff. Some friends were advised to join NZ sections so that they could get newsletters, training etc, but local Oz content would be even better.

Because I'm in Sydney I can't make the meeting, but good luck.

Further to David and Eric's note earlier this month...

As you are aware, David and Eric have organised a meeting of
interested mountaineers in Melbourne to further outline the proposed
structure and activities of the Australian chapter within NZAC in
more detail.

Thanks to their support, and the help of Nigel Donnelly and Stephen
Lennard, a Sydney meeting has now also been arranged, in order to
discuss the new proposal. Meeting details are as follows:
