Right hand climbs

Just had a thought, which is rare for me. Are most climbs better for Right handers? I recently did the second pitch of Eagle cleft at Araps and felt uncomfortable going left on the pitch. Probably having pre climbing dumb question syndrome.

I'm not a hard climber generally, but I'd add - I find placing gear & clipping much harder with my left hand. I'm sitting at home right now - so can't be sure - but if I close my eyes and imagine trying to clip - I automatically feel like my left hand would be gripping and I'd be reaching around with my right for gear. Obviously not always.

I wonder what percentage of cruxes are right handed & if that's carried over in the grades?

Thanks Martym for the serious reply. I definitely feel more comfortable on Right trending climbs. I wonder if Right hand climbers have most of their favourite gear on their rack on their Right side. Anyway I am off to get my rack ready for tomorrow. I plan to try and lead a grade 14 for the first time. Have a safe Easter everyone.

Ps. Just read your post from 2010 on girlfriends and wives climbing and had a good laugh. For my 53rd birthday my wife has planned to go to Araps for 3 days! And all I have to do is mow the frigging lawn today. Pretty easy trade off. By the way, she normally mows the lawn every other time and is a pretty good seconder.

Firstly roundup is better than the mower. Secondly holds and gear appear on bothsides. Third
My have I been trolled

Trolling on this Forum? Surely not! You need to use your other hand...
to type ambidextrously, ... or as wallwombat might suggest, open stubbies with, as practising in a packraft will only cause you to go in circles!
Heh, heh, heh.

Regarding original post thought; I think some climbs that follow rising traverse lines favour particular approach styles, along with offset corners and cracks, and this coupled with the majority of the population being right handed could lead to the conclusion groveller has drawn.

As for gear racking, I have some of each type and size on both sides of my harness so as not to be caught out for placements.
My dominant hand is my right and I find finicky placements easier with it as a result.

You put gear on your harness? i thought your generation still used gear slings!

Same here - as I said above, if it's a tricky placement, I'll go out of my way to try get a good hold for my left hand.

I sometimes try to play tennis left handed; try to write with my left hand - just to ensure that I'm not completely useless with it.
My father-in-law lost the fingers on his right hand in a circular saw accident... he still writes with his right hand stumps, but obviously has had to learn to use his left for most other things.

Would be good to do that poll again - I wonder if there's been a change in the last 8 years?
Does your girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/partner/significant-other climb? - Wish I'd gone with a catchier headline like "Is your partner also your partner?
It's at 57% Yes - which I think says more about chockstone than climbers... a secondary poll would be - did you introduce your significant other to climbing?

For the record I met my wife in a climbing gym.

I do use a gear sling but suffer the aid climbers fault of taking too much rack up climbs, so the 'get out of trouble' pro goes on the harness!
;-)

If you edit your initial post on that thread it should let you also edit the title.
If you then post to it the results it has garnered so far, it would act as a bookmark and bump it at the same time for further response under the new title.
