They have paid me for use of several photos on their website. Of course by the time i got the cheque and converted it to aussie dollors and paid a tonne of stupid bank fees I got about $20. Oh well.

Ask for western union, less fees that way.....you bank should only charge you $10 for international cheque...if they charge you more than that...they are ripping you off.

Probably the best way to get money transferred from overseas is to get a cheque in the overseas currency and present it at your bank My bank (NAB - free plug!) charge $10 flat rate to convert it and put it in my account. Of course if you're dealing with small amounts this is an expensive way of doing it but the alternatives are much more expensive.
I recently had 200 pounds sterling sent out from the UK and the fees for an international money order came to around 30 pounds, payable at the UK end. $10 at this end is a bargain in comparison!
Not all banks are bastards, just most!

i use paypal or direct debit for 99% of stuff, for some reason theres just a couple pl out there who like making life harder
