I think you have a point, a lot looks like wee wipes, but some did look like they had been shit, but that the poo had degraded quicker than the paper. We had also had a fair bit of rain (for us) in the preceding week so maybe that helped the shit wash away? And I'm pretty sure the tampon came from a woman!

For the women of the outdoor world, I have a few suggestions (that I would have thought were obvious, but apparently not):

For wee:

shake and wait a moment to dry instead of wiping - kinda like guys do really!

where a light pad in your pants if you are bothered by a few drips of urine (dispose of in a bin at end of day not at crag!!!).

if you have to wipe, bury thoroughly or carry a snap lock bag to carry paper out in.

I recommend plan A as it doesn't involve any extra resources at all.

For periods:

Get a menstrual cup. http://www.fleurcup.com/en (you'll find cheap copies from china on ebay as well) These things are great. Empty into a hole, cover, reinsert.

If you have to use disposable sanitary products, bring a snap lock bag and carry them out. Don't bury them. They take ages to degrade and many have plastics in them anyway. In the meanwhile, consider the contribution of sanitary products to landfill and the extensive use of resources in their production, not to mention the dent in your finances from them (yes, I have a bee in my bonnet about them as well!)
